Staining the Exterior of our Cedarhouse CLOSE RESPONSE

We have a signature home with cedar planks as the exterior cladding. The house is over 13 years old and the cedar planks have weathered and look old.. Should we paint or stain the cedar? What would be the preparation involved for what you recommend?

Response from Mitre 10: We recommend that you stain the exterior cladding cedar planks. With the advances in technology we now have a superior acrylic stain that you could use: the Dulux Intergrain range.
1 - Clean the exterior timbers using Cabots Kleenwood prior to applying a stain. (Note: Only use this product if you have access to a clean water hose that you can use to wash off the excess product with!) Using a brush, apply the Cabots Kleenwood liberally to exterior timbers effected by mildew, mould, dirt or areas of grey (degraded) weathered fibres. (Wear protective clothing and protect shrubs and vegetation.) Let set 15 - 20 minutes. Rinse away mildew, dirt etc with a garden hose at maximum pressure. Allow to dry thoroughly before applying the stain.
2 - Apply first coat: Dimension 4, from the Intergrain range. This is a water based, clear, penetrating, water repellent, anti fungal timber pre-treatment. It is a primer and a sealer.
3 - Apply 2nd and 3rd coats: UVC, from the Intergrain range. UVC provides protection, preservation and enhancement of timber finishes for weatherboards, cladding, fascias, etc. It contains active UV absorbers, water repellents, fungicide and algicide. Minimises blackening with mould, algae and oxidation. No sanding is required between coats. It`s fast drying and you can use water for the cleanup.
