2012 Community of the Year Awards

Mitre 10 is delighted, to continue our support of the New Zealander of the Year awards, as the patron of The Mitre 10 Community of the Year Award. This award provides groups with an opportunity, to be recognised for their achievements and service to their communities.
 

They say a community is only a community when people work together. The Mitre 10 Community of the Year Award will acknowledge those groups or organisations working together to build better communities.
 

Finalists have now been named; Christchurch Charity Hospital, the Paeroa Community & the Asian Events Trust.

Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue

The Takahe, one of New Zealand’s rarest native birds, has been carefully brought back from the brink of extinction by the efforts of DOC and many volunteers. One of them, Sophie a 10 yr old schoolgirl from Southland, wrote seeking support for the Takahe; so that their beauty and ‘place’ in New Zealand’s great outdoors would not be lost forever. Sophie’s letter came to the attention of Mitre 10; we felt she spoke for many New Zealanders in wanting to protect this bird.
 

Rediscovered in 1948, the Takahe still struggles to breed, so dedicated captive management programmes are vital to protect and nurture this endangered bird.

We are proud to support Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue – a sponsorship partnership with DOC that was made possible by the New Zealand National Parks and Conservation Foundation.

Plunket

Plunket is a community-based organisation unique to New Zealand and over 100 years old, providing free services that help to ensure young children are cared for by knowledgeable, confident and loving families. Strong networks of clinical staff and volunteers work together in communities across the country to provide support for parents and whanau with children up to 5 years of age.

Plunket offers parents information, support and developmental assessments of their child. Each year, tens of thousands of New Zealand parents and whanau use Plunket services. Plunket nurses provide support through home and clinic visits, mobile clinics and PlunketLine, a free telephone advice service for parents (0800 933 922, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Plunket also organises car seat rental schemes, parent groups, parenting education and toy libraries – most of which are available nationwide and free of charge.

Mitre 10 (NZ) Ltd will raise funds and awareness for Plunket through a variety of campaigns and promotions with a key focus on household safety. By raising awareness and promoting safety products, Mitre 10 and Plunket are ensuring kiwi homes are safe and sound for children to live in. ACC Safety Week

Did you know on average 25,000 people a year require hospitilisation from an injury that happened in their own home? It is statistics like this that prompted ACC to launch the 'Safety Begins at Home' campaign last year. This year, ACC is more determined than ever to help reduce the amount of injuries in the home.

Mitre 10 is proud to support ACC Home Safety Week by inspiring consumers to consider purchasing many of our safety products. By supporting the week of events and activites, we are encouraging people to find out how they can make their home a safer place. ACC will show simple things you can do to reduce the risk of being injured in your own home.

Neurological Foundation

The Neurological Foundation is New Zealand`s principal non-profit organisation dedicated to funding research into disorders of the brain and nervous system. Neurological disorders will affect one in five New Zealanders during their lifetime and their incidence is increasing. Mitre 10 supports the Foundation`s Annual Appeal every July.
 

Sticky TV

D.I.Y really is in our D.N.A which is why Mitre 10 MEGA are a proud sponsor of Sticky TV! Sticky TV is a fantastic TV series on FOUR targeted at 5 – 12 year olds.

The series is based on intelligent & fun activities that gets kids dirty, involved & enjoying themselves. The show encourages the development of positive young New Zealanders who like to live life to the full once the TV is turned off; true D.I.Y’ers!
