Where Mitre 10 Began
During 1959 several Melbourne-based independent retailers looked at how they could work together to improve customer service while also meeting competitive challenges.
Result: they formed a co-operative of hardware, builders` and plumbers` merchants, launching what was to become the biggest retail hardware brand throughout Australasia.
Why That Name ?
As two of the founding members passed the Mitre Tavern in Melbourne inspiration struck: `mitre` is a hardware term. The `10`? - well, they needed 10 stores to turn their plans into reality.
